My name, Elvia, was chosen by my dad,
but he got it from my mom. My mom’s second name is Elvia, and so he wanted to
name me like her. My mom did not mind her one daughter being named like herself.
When I was born, I weighted eight and a half pounds, and twenty inches tall. My
mom says that I was born in less than an hour, so the birth process was fast. I
am the youngest of two siblings which is only my brother and I. My brother and I
are eight years in difference and I think he was very happy when I was born to
have a sister to play with. On my birthday, my grandma was present. It is such a
coincidence that she was there because she comes from Mexico every year, and
that month when I was born, she was there. I love spending time with grandma;
she is so loving and caring. The day I went to Mexico for the first time to
visit her, I remember playing on her roof top with some friends that I made. I
also remember her large dog; he knocked me down about three times.
I think what is special and unique
about my family is how every one is a survivor in their own way. All of my
family members have something tremendous happen in their life. My mom had breast
cancer twice at 36 and then at 41, thankfully she survived. My brother has gone
to Iraq twice and survived even if there where some times where the Iraqis tried
to set some bombs and miraculously they mal- functioned. My dad has gone through
so much in his childhood, working, and trying to help out his mom with 9
children. All of these things that we think are miracles have brought us closer
to celebrating Jesus and Virgin Mary. Every year the traditions of celebrating
come alive with all of my family members. My favorite memory of a family holiday
I would say is the second time I went to Mexico. It was so nice because there
were all types of activities.
All of my life I have lived in
Oxnard. In Oxnard, there is a mix of everything: big houses, small houses, rich
houses, poor houses, etc. I think it’s nice to live here in Oxnard because the
climate is nice and you can live in a place where it is not ugly.
My favorite hobby would be swimming
because I think it’s so much fun being in the water. I love spending time
swimming from one side of the pool, or diving under water to collect pennies I
throw in before. Speaking of what I like to do, when I was about 3, I had a
little harmonica which I did not know how to play, but I loved making sounds
with it. With my harmonica, I would play to my mom, but she did not like it,
so then I would go to my dad or brother, and they too did
not
like it. In my spare time, now I like playing fetch or tug with my dog.
I currently do not play any sports,
but when I was little, my cousins and I would go outside in the streets and
play baseball, but we tried not to hit the ball so hard. My cousins and I
played in which ever positions we wanted. In whatever positions I was in, I
was not bad at all . Besides baseball with my cousins, we would race to see who
was the fastest. What I liked best about it was when I won. I wasn’t always
the winner, but I was always a fast runner.
The best family vacation or trip
that I know of is when my mom, my dad, my brother and me went to Las Vegas.
Over there in Las Vegas, we stayed in a hotel named Circus Circus. While my
mom and my brother would go gambling, I would go with my dad to see the stores
or just walk around as long as we can and then take a taxi back to the hotel.
The second day that I was there, my mom took me to the indoor amusement park.
At night, my mom and I would also go walk and into the malls or see shows like
Treasure Island. I remember the year of the trip was in 2003. What I did not
like about the trip was that when I arrived at the hotel I would smell a lot
like cigar, even the bed where I stayed at smelled horrible. On the good side,
I had lots of fun, and I wanted to stay there even longer.
What I like about school is being in
clubs and all of the fun stuff like rallies or games. The great friends that I
have made makes school a lot better too. Some of the teachers are not bad at all
either, so it’s nice to have teachers who are not too boring. The clubs that I
participate in are cooking club, and LCC. I love Cooking Club because I get to
do something that I love, and I always learn how to do something new. LCC, I
decided to go in because I’ve heard it’s fun, and when you’re a senior there is
an opportunity to get a scholarship.
My favorite subject right now would
be computer applications because I learn what I never knew, and I don’t mind
typing all period. I also like Chem-study because I like the labs and the
explosions. This class does give me headaches though because there is math
involved and I am very bad at it. It takes me a long time to figure out the
right answer if I can, or I always have to go for help after school. The most
recent certificate that I got was in Biology for having the highest grade from
all of the periods and I am very proud of that because it shows if you have the
will, you can do anything.
The college that I plan to attend is
Northridge or San Diego. I want to go there because it’s close by to hometown so
that way renting an apartment is not a problem, and it will save me money for
college. After school, I plan to buy a house, get married, and have kids, and of
course be working in my profession. This profession that I want to be is a
psychologist for adults. I choose this because I like listening to people’s
problems, and I think I can do something to help them cope with them. Mainly, I
just want to help people.
Everything that is in my life is
important to me, from family, where I came from, school, to what I will do in
the future. I know that everything will fall into place as long as I don’t give
up and continue life as it is. The small and big obstacles will make me
stronger, (that includes having trouble in chemistry); I know that I am getting
something out of it. The most important thing is to enjoy life every minute of
it, and not complain in whatever it is.
