Growing up I
have always had a love and passion for music, all kinds of music: oldies,
funk, disco, Motown, hip-hop, rap, and R&B-- you name it; I liked it. So as I
got older, naturally I grew an interest in becoming a DJ. I am now apart of “MD
Entertainment Group”. Although I get paid to play, it still remains my
hobby and passion. Being a DJ isn’t just pressing play, there is actually a
lot of thought and practice that goes into an event. For example, my best
friend and partner DJ McAzian and I practice daily for many hours putting play
lists together, and teaching each other the tricks of the trade. You see, you
can’t just play one song then play the next, you have to pay attention to the
beats per minute or BPM.
Beat
matching, amongst DJs, is the speeding up or down of a song in order to match
the BPM of a previous track so both can be flawlessly mixed. DJ’s are an
extension of the original radio disc jockeys. In the past, Mobile DJs used
vinyl records or cassettes. In the 1990s, Compact Disc became the standard. We
travel with mobile sound systems and play from a large collection of music and
play lists for a specific audience. Now a days, DJ’s need a large selection of
music, professional-grade equipment, good
organizational
skills, vocal talent as an MC, mixing skills, quality lighting, insurance for
liability, and on-site back-up equipment. Almost all music today is digital,
DJ Mcazian and myself use a
numark
mixer (which we use to play CD’s), the
Hercules DJ console which is equip with virtual DJ, and our laptops.
As you
can see being a DJ is not as easy as most people think, there is countless hours
put into become a talented DJ. My hobby as a DJ brings not only happiness to
myself, but to the people I entertain as well. That is part of the reason I love
being a DJ, we help make moments in peoples lives more memorable. I really could
not ask for more, my partner is my best friend that I have grown up with for
most of my life, I bring a good time with me where ever I go, and its music
plain and simple.
